Brandon Bonello (Williams) showed his class in the fifth round of the V1 Malta Series Main Championship as he secured pole position and went on to win the race in Catalunya.
The race started with Bonello losing the lead to Adrian Manduca (Ferrari), who reacted quickly at the start. However, a number of incidents into turn 2 caused a lot of position changes in the midfield in just the first lap. Halfway through lap 4, Manduca spun and fell back to 10th place, only to climb back up to second after fighting off all the cars ahead. There were a lot of battles in the midfield throughout the race, with drivers Chris Ciantar (Haas) and Osbert Xuereb (Williams) managing to get their first points of the season. However, the Driver of the Day award went to Matthias Farrugia (Alfa Romeo), who finished comfortably in the top 5 after qualifying in 12th place.
Bonello’s performance was the standout feature of the race. After losing the previous win to a penalty, he was determined to make up for it and did so in style by finishing more than 14 seconds in front of second place. The win also helped him to increase his lead over the other drivers in the championship.
