Kienu ftit il-mumenti fl-istorja ta’ art twelidna fejn konna fdati bit-tmexxija tal-futur t’ Organizazzjonijiet bil-wisq ikbar minna. Malta tinsab s’ sitwazzjoni bla preċedent fejn qed tmexxi tnejn mill-ikbar organizazzjonijiet fid-dinja- l-Kunsill tal-Unjoni Ewropea u l-Commonwealth.
Għalhekk il-Prim Ministru Joseph Muscat, waqt ikla bejn kummissarji għolja, għamel l-intenzjoni tiegħu ċara, dik li jinbotta l-idea li f’ dawn iż-żminijiet t’ inċertezza minnħabba Brexit, ikun ir-Renju Unit stess li joħloq għaqda iktar b’ saħħitha bejn l-Unjoni Ewropea u l-Commonwealth.
Fi kliem il-Prim Ministru: “whilst the European Union and the Commonwealth are very distinct bodies they nevertheless have much to offer to each other in terms of economic opportunities. There is a potential to forge together a powerful voice in international trade.”
Huwa l-irwol ta’ Malta u Ċipru, bħala l-uniku żewġ pajjiżi li fadal membri fiż-żewġ Organizazzjonijiet li għandhom jirrapreżentaw l-interessi tal-pajjiżi tal-Commonwealth fi ħdan l-Unjoni Ewropea stqarr Muscat.
“A stronger linkage and alliance between the two organisations can be of tremendous benefit to all. This is a time that requires resiliance, goodwill and determination. A time were optimism is not a luxury but is a necessity” żied jgħid Muscat
Il-Prim Ministru fakkar kif din mhix biss kwistjoni t’ ottimiżmu imma tista twassal għal bidliet tanġibbli fil-Commonwealth- biex din l-Organizazzjoni terġa’ tikseb ir-rilevanza tagħha fil-present u l-futur.
“This turn of events provides an opportunity also to turn a commonwalth based on the past into a commonwealth buildt on future opportunities. It will change the meaning of the CM of our young people from a nostalgic historic society to a vibrant organisation providing jobs.”
