L-Ewroparlamentari Olandiża Sophie In ’T Veld, li mexxiet id-delegazzjoni tal-Kumitat tal-Parlament Ewropew għal-Libertajiet Ċivili, il-Ġustizzja, u l-Intern fi żjara f’pajjiżna fil-ġimgħat li għaddew, kellha kliem pożittiv dwar it-tisħiħ fis-saltna tad-dritt f’Malta.
Dan għamlitu waqt laqgħa f’Kumitat Parlamentari fi Brussell.
Qalet, “I do see Malta, are there still concerns? Yes there are still concerns but we have also noted that there is progress, there is progress and I think we are supporting that process.”
Sophie In ’T Veld faħħret bosta riformi, fosthom it-tisħiħ fil-ħidma tal-FIAU kontra l-kriminalità finanzjarja u anki l-fatt li l-Uffiċċju tal-Avukat Ġenerali nfatam u qed jieħu ħsieb il-prosekuzzjonijiet filwaqt li mbagħad hemm l-Avukat tal-Istat.
Qalet, “When it comes to financial crimes we have taken note of a positive developments in the FIAU, which has substantially stepped up its activity and output. EPPO has now even been involved in a handful of cases, so that’s all positive.”
In ’T Veld imbagħad ikkritikat aspetti oħra, fosthom il-ħtieġa li tiżdied l-effiċjenza fil-proċessi ġudizzjarji.
L-Ewroparlamentari Laburista Cyrus Engerer, li wkoll huwa membru fil-kumitat tal-LIBE, innota l-impenn tal-gvern Malti biex ikompli jdaħħal riformi favur it-tisħiħ tas-saltna tad-Dritt.
Innota kif il-gvern Malti wkoll jirrimarka li hemm fejn jitjiebu l-affarijiet, fosthom fiż-żieda fl-effiċjenza tal-Qrati.
Saħaq ukoll li Malta hija pijuniera fit-tfassil tal-liġi għall-protezzjoni tal-ġurnalisti permezz tal-liġi Anti-Slapp.
Qal, “More legislative matters are also in the works as the Maltese Government is preparing a legal amendment to strenghten the protection of journalists. A testament to this is a comment made back in April when the EU Commissioner Věra Jourová had mentioned how Malta was already exploring the possibility of introducing this law at that time. Even before our initiative here and the LIBE Committees in the European Parliament for any EU wide anti-Slapp law.”
ll-kummenti mill-Kumitat LIBE jsegwu ittra mibgħuta mill-President tal-Kummissjoni Ewropea, Ursula von der Leyen lill-Prim Ministru Robert Abela, li fiha rrikonoxxiet il-bosta riformi li twettqu u qed jitwettqu favur is-saltna tad-dritt f’pajjiżna.
F’din l-ittra, Von der Leyen irrimarkat kif ħafna mill-konklużjonijiet u r-rakkomandazzjonijiet tal-inkjesta pubblika dwar il-qtil ta’ Daphne Caruana Galizia ġew jew qed jiġu indirizzati.
