It-tibdil fil-klima, l-immigrazzjoni, l-Afganistan u l-pandemija.
Dawn kienu t-temi ewlenin li sawru d-diskors tal-Prim Ministru Robert Abela waqt li kien qed jindirizza s-Summit tal-EUMED9 fil-Kapitali Griega, Ateni.
L-EUMED9 ilaqqa’ flimkien il-pajjiżi tal-Mediterran li jinsabu fl-Unjoni Ewropea sabiex jiddiskutu affarijiet reġjonali. Hawn il-Prim Ministru tkellem dwar it-tibdil fil-klima hekk kif sostna li l-Mediterran huwa ‘climate change hotspot.’
Dwar dan il-Prim Ministru Robert Abela qal li l-Unjoni Ewropea trid tkompli tmexxi bl-eżempju f’din il-ġlieda anke fil-laqgħa li jmiss tal-COP26 li se ssir fi Glasgow.
Qal, “As regards mitigation, a lot of work has been set in motion at an EU level with the Fit for 55 Package setting us on the right course. Taking the necessary action is a must. Our discussion today on biodiversity, forests, the marine environment and blue economy confirmed that ambitious action needs to be taken on a regional and global level.”
Dwar is-sigurtà fil-Mediterran aċċenna għar-rispett lejn id-drittijiet tas-sovranità u l-liġijiet internazzjonali. Sostna wkoll l-importanza tal-koperazzjoni mat-Turkija fid-dawl tas-sitwazzjoni li qed tiżviluppa fl-Afganistan.
Spjega, “The EU’s disengagement from the area is not an option. It is vital for the EU and its Member States to work closely with neighbouring countries in the region to stabilise Afghanistan. This will in turn also reduce the risk of increased migratory flows, an area where we also should start thinking of co-ordination and common guidelines. Malta’s contribution to this effort may be small and limited in certain aspects, but our political will and commitment to the cause are strong and significant.”
Il-Prim Ministru aċċenna wkoll għall-kriżi tal-immigrazzjoni u rrimarka l-ħidma ta’ Malta anke flimkien mal-Libja li qed twassal għal riżultat mill-aqwa f’dan ir-rigward.
Qal, “Let us engage with Libya at an economic level. Let us give business opportunities to Libya. Let us discuss investments with Libya. Let us not think of Libya as just a source of irregular migration because it is not. I am please to announce today, I have already informed my colleagues that as of next Monday, Malta and Libya will be resuming commercial flights.”
Dr Abela temm id-diskors tiegħu jitkellem dwar il-pandemija tal-Covid-19. Tenna kif id-direzzjoni li ħadet l-Unjoni Ewropea biex tiġġieled din il-pandemija kienet strumentali.
Hawnekk tkellem fost l-oħrajn dwar il-pjan ta’ rkupru ta’ Next Genereation EU hekk kif iddeskrivih bħala ftehim storiku li huwa indikattiv għas-solidarjetà Ewropea.
Dr Abela fakkar kif il-pjan ta’ rkupru Malti li propju ġie ffirmat jumejn ilu mill-President tal-Kummissjoni Ewropea Ursula von der Leyen jagħti prominenza t-trasformazzjoni ħadra u diġitali ekonomika.
