Fil-Parlament Ewropew, Malta qed tiġi mfaħħra għax-xogħlijiet fuq il-proġett massiċċ ta’ ħamsin miljun ewro tax-shore to ship, li se jnaqqas b’aktar minn disgħin fil-mija t-tniġġis tal-arja mill-vapuri tal-passiġġieri u tal-merkanzija li jkunu sorġuti fl-istess port.
B’hekk il-vapuri jkunu jistgħu jitfu l-magni tagħhom li jaħdmu bil-gass jew bil-heavy fuel oil b’riżultat li jnaqqsu drastikament id-dħaħen li joħorġu miċ-ċmieni tagħhom u minflok jitqabbdu mas-sistema għall-provvista tal-elettriku li se jkun hemm fuq ix-xatt.
L-Ewroparlamentari Olandiża Vera Tax, li hija wkoll attivista fil-qasam ambjentali, f’kummenti mal-ġurnalist ta’ ONE News fi Strasburgu qalet kif Malta qed tkun ta’ eżempju għall-pajjiżi Ewropej.
Hija qalet, “All the ships that arrive, especially the cruise liners, they can stop with their engines being fuelled by heavy fuelled oil and they go on electricity. This is like zero emissions, and that is so nice for the people in Malta but also for the EU because this have to be in all harbours to use electricity so we can stop the air pollution. It was really inspiring to be there and I hope that all harbours in the EU will manage because this is the only way we can reach out aims in the climate change.”
Dan il-proġett se jgħin sabiex fuq medda ta’ 20 sena Malta tiffranka sa €375 miljun fi spejjeż ikkawżati mit-tniġġis fl-arja, bħal dawk ta’ saħħa u kura medika kif ukoll sabiex jittaffew l-impatti tat-tniġġis fuq l-ambjent.
Il-Ministru għat-Trasport Ian Borg ħabbar ukoll kif bħalissa qed jiġi msaqqaf il-frequency convertor station tax-Shore to Ship, it-tieni l-akbar proġett ambjentali f’pajjiżna.
